Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions (33-37) given below it. The latest Forest Survey of India report has sent shivers down the spine of environmentalists and the green lobby reports our correspondent. Every day, about 1.45 sq. km. of dense forest cover is being lost in the state on an average due to wanton destruction, especially, illegal falling by timber smugglers. The report said nearly 1062 sq.km of dense forest has vanished in the state during the last two years. Although 896 sq. km. of open forest and mangroves had been added to the forest area of the state during the same period. Experts feel the loss in terms of dense forest was irreparable. MANAGE The forest areas which has borne the onslaught of the timber mafia most during recent years cover almost two fifth of the total area of the state. The timber mafia which have ruled the root in these forest areas have mostly thrived on smuggling out illegally felled timber to neighbouring states. The forest loss in financial terms during the forest and mangroves as per conservative estimates h two years after accounting for the value of the gain in open forests of the state has been estimated at Rs. 25, 10,263 been Rs. 33.233 crore. The total environmental value of crore. Secretary of the Wild life Society and other of dense forest loss attributed the failure of the forest officials, while expressing concern over the alarming rate department and wildlife wing in curbing the illegal falling of trees to inadequate infrastructure. The number of armed encounters and assault of forest personnel had registered a quantum increase in recent years. Moreover, the budget allocation of Rs. 70 crore for the department was quite inadequate to ensure protection of the forest wealth, the Wildlife Society secretary observed. It is a well-known fact that the environmental value of forests always exceeds the financial value. Therefore, falling of trees results in tangible financial losses and much more environmental losses which are not tangible. Preservation of wildlife, minimizing the adverse effects of pollution, better rainfall are some of the advantages of forests. Hence, adequate measures to protect existing forests and measures for further afforestation need to be taken up on war footing.
